Sign up for nomorobo.com which will screen out most automated phone calls. Free on landlines, approximately $2/month for mobiles. Unfortunately this does not work on hard-wired phone service.

Best Choice: Get your refund or pay your tax via direct deposit/electronic transfer. 2nd Choice: If you must use the USPS mail, mail your letter at the post office, pay for tracking and get a Avoid phone scams by checking caller ID. If you do not recognize it, do not answer. Legitimate callers will leave a message. If the message claims to be from a government agency, do not return the call. Government agencies always correspond through USPS.
