SCAM ALERT – BEWARE OF PACKAGE DELIVERY EMAIL SCAMS!
Scammers use many and varied approaches in getting you to respond to their scams. A resident recently encountered a scam that involves the resident receiving an official looking email from FedEx in which the scammer states that they had attempted to deliver a package but were unable to reach the resident. The scammer email claims that in order to receive the package, a personal signature is required, and it includes a website link that the resident is to click-on and open in order to set-up a delivery date. The email states that it is a time sensitive issue, and that if the resident does not reply promptly, the package will be sent back to the sender. In this case, the very alert resident recognized this email scam and deleted the email immediately.
This type of email scam not only includes FedEx but can refer to any package delivery service, such as UPS, Amazon, or any other delivery company.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Had the resident opened the link, the scammer could have possibly taken over the resident’s computer.
Scammers are active every day, and email scams are becoming increasingly common. Protect yourself and your information and finances by staying alert and following these important tips:
HOW TO AVOID EMAIL SCAMS:
• Read carefully and slowly. If a message urges quick action, it’s likely a scam. Just delete it.
• Do not reply to unknown senders. Legitimate senders will find other ways to contact you.
• Verify contact information. If an email asks you to provide personal information, call a bank or company, look up the number independently.
Never call a phone number provided in the message.
• Watch for red flags. Be cautious if the message:
• Asks you to call a number or click a link
• Claims you owe money
• Mentions cryptocurrency — delete and block the sender immediately
