Lincoln Police Department -Traffic Tip Tuesday
Minor crash. No injuries. What now?
If you’re involved in a traffic collision and no one is injured, here’s what California law and common sense say to do next:
- Move it if you can.
- If the vehicles are drivable, safely move them out of traffic. Blocking lanes creates secondary crashes and puts everyone at risk.
- Exchange information.
California Vehicle Code requires drivers involved in a collision to exchange:
• Name and current address
• Driver license number
• Vehicle registration information
• Insurance company and policy number - Document the scene – Use your phone to take photos of:
• Vehicle damage
• License plates
• Overall scene and vehicle positions
These photos can be extremely helpful for insurance later. - Contact your insurance.
Once you’re safe and out of traffic, notify your insurance company as soon as it’s convenient. - Do I need the police?
• Police are not required for minor crashes with no injuries.
• Officers can assist with traffic control and help facilitate the exchange of information.
• Police reports are not taken for non-injury, minor damage collisions.
Bottom line: stay calm, stay safe, get out of traffic, and handle the exchange properly.
