TIP OF THE DAY – RED FLAGS for Phone and Email Scams

  • Requests for personal information
  • Urgent or threatening language
  • Spelling errors or improper grammar
  • Link to a site that seems unrelated to the organization that contacted you
  • Missing contact information in an email
  • Payment via gift card

ATTEMPTED FRAUD SCAM: Recently one of our residents received a very official looking text allegedly from the Bank of America. This text stated, “Fraud: Your B of A debit card has a temporary restriction.” A number to call to “verify and authorize your account” was listed. This resident does have a B of A credit card however she suspected that this was a scam as she does not have a debit card. She contacted the B of A and confirmed that this was a scam. This resident was very sharp and alert therefore there was no loss in this attempted scam.

Never use the phone number the scammer provides – Call your bank using the phone number on your credit card or bank statement.

BURGLARY: A resident in the 300 block of Shepherds Court reports that some person(s) unknown entered his residence sometime on Friday 10/06/23 between 10:00AM and 5:00PM. The perpetrator(s) had gained entry by removing the window screen on an open window next to the front door. The loss was money and jewelry. The Lincoln police responded and took a report. (V29 backs to golf course, East Joiner Pkwy & Del Webb Blvd, entrance is Farmgate Ln off Del Webb Blvd)

We live in a relatively safe community, however from time to time there are opportunist thieves who drive through our villages looking for easy targets, i.e. doors or windows left open or unlocked, valuables left in plain view in vehicles.

The police cannot be everywhere; therefore, residents need to BE ALERT AND REPORT ANY SUSPICIOUS PERSONS OR VEHICLES – this is the mission of Neighborhood Watch – OBSERVE AND REPORT.

If it’s an emergency, call 911 immediately to give police time to arrive, for non-emergency call 916 645-4040.

When describing vehicles, note the license plate numbers, make and model of vehicle, color, age, and direction of travel and give this information to the dispatcher when you call.
