Tips to avoid scams provided by businesses:
Amazon:
- Will never ask you to pay on the phone.
- Will not pressure you to act urgently.
- You can report suspicious communications at amazon.com/reportascam
Bank of America warns there are 5 signs of a scam:
- Asked to act immediately
- Asked to provide personal information or a code
- Asked to pay in an usual way, such as a gift card
- Try to confirm your identity with a verification code they send you even though they called you
- Insist you download apps or click links to “fix” issues or confirm information
Banks can help prevent unauthorized activity by setting up alerts for accounts:
- Credit card not present during a transaction
- Online automatic payment over an amount that you set
- Changes to your User ID, Password
- Low or overdrawn balance
PG&E
- Will not ask for payment by gift card or mobile payment apps
- Will not threaten to disconnect power if payment is not made immediately
- Will not ask for Social Security, credit card or PGE account numbers, or login information
- Will not come to your door without an appointment
- Report scams at 833 500-SCAM
