Golf Cart Fire: On January 24, 2023 at approximately 2:30PM a fire occurred on the 2400 block of Blue Heron Loop. The Battalion Fire Chief on the scene said that a golf cart had been in use and was then parked in the garage. The fire was apparently due to some type of mechanical issue with the golf cart. The cart was totally destroyed therefore it was not possible to examine it to determine the exact cause of the fire. The cart batteries were NOT being charged when the fire broke out.
**The Lincoln Fire Department cautions residents not to leave any batteries on a charger for extended periods of time. This includes the small batteries used with hand tools or lawn tools. (Most chargers for computers, cell phones, etc. have a built-in mechanism to stop when fully charged.)
The following are a few simple steps to ensure your safety when charging your golf cart or NEV.
- Follow the manufacturer’s charging recommendations
- Use the charger provided by the manufacturer
- Charge the vehicle in a ventilated area
- Be sure to charge the cart when someone is home – and never overnight
It is recommended that every residence have at least one fire extinguisher located in an area which will give immediate access to the extinguisher when needed. The best type of fire extinguisher has an “ABC ” rating. This “ABC” rating covers all types of fires. Extinguishers have either an expiration date or a red/green indicator. Shaking the extinguisher monthly keeps the powder from being compacted.
The National Fire Prevention Association has some cautions & tips on golf cart maintenance.
