TIP OF THE DAY

The latest Sun Senior News dated December, 2022 has a typo in the phone number for LPD non-emergencies. The correct number is 916 645-4040. The List of Important Numbers flyer is available on sclhwatch.org.

THEFT

A catalytic converter was stolen from a resident’s vehicle while it was parked in the resident’s driveway on the 2300 block of Longspur Loop. There are no known suspects at this time. (V36 backs to open space & Spring Valley Parkway)

MAILBOX BREAK-IN

Some person(s) unknown broke into a mailbox located on Yosemite Ct on 12/1/22.  Some mail and a present were taken. Mailbox thefts generally occur during the late night or early morning.  Our mailboxes are not very secure therefore never leave mail overnight in the cluster mail boxes.  In the event of a mail break-in, the phone numbers for authorities are on the Mail Station Break-in Flyer. (V14 backs to golf course & Ingram Pkwy, entrance is Yosemite Ln, off Del Webb near E Joiner Pkwy)

RECENT SCAMS

NETFLIX

The resident receives a text allegedly from Netflix stating that they need an update on some personal information. If you do not initiate the contact, do not give out your personal information.

SMOKE DAMAGE

A letter came to one of our residents stating that the resident’s property may be contaminated from the smoke generated by the forest fires in California. The letter came from California Recovery Group, a company in Glendale and included pictures of some type of alleged damage to other properties which they had inspected. The company owner, Aaron Youssefi, offers free on-site inspection and evaluation. The letter also states that if there is damage found they are able to obtain financial recovery for the resident.

This letter appears legitimate, but residents should beware. Free upfront costs may not turn out to be free. Plus, at some point the company representatives will want your personal information which could lead to you losing money. This sharp resident did not fall for this alleged sales pitch.

NORTH AMERICA CONSUMER PROMOTION DRAWING organized for all customers of Wal-Mart, Sears, Home Depot, Safeway, etc.

Enclosed with this USPS letter was an official looking check for $2,675.50 drawn on a bank in Wheaton, Illinois. This letter goes on to say that the resident was entitled to “the sum of US $250,000” and must call the “Claims Agent” James Skinner at an 800 number to claim the winnings. The letter continues stating that there will be an insurance fee of $2000.00 required before the winnings can be sent to the resident. The resident did not respond to the obvious scam attempt.  (In this case the scammer is enticing the resident to call by enclosing the $2,675.50 check. When the resident calls, the scammer (claims agent) will attempt to obtain personal information and/or get the resident to send the $2000, or to expedite the claim by giving the scammer a credit card number.)

PHONE CALL FROM AT&T REPRESENTATIVE

The scammer told the resident that with a $330 dollar deposit she could get a discount from AT&T and Target and lower her monthly bill. The resident was instructed to get a “Gift Card” for that amount and to call him back. The resident did as instructed. The Scammer called back and said that the card did not go through and to try again. The resident went to CVS and Safeway, attempting to get another card. Both stores refused to sell her a gift card and both told her it was a scam. The resident lost $330 dollars.

Note: No company or official organization will ask for payment in gift cards. THERE IS NO WAY TO GET BACK GIFT CARD MONEY! Never give out personal information to someone you don’t know. Remember when you hear or read GIFT CARD, HANG UP OR DELETE THE EMAIL!!

CASH DONATIONS  WILL BE REQUESTED DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON!

Do not make contributions via phone. Tell solicitors that you always contact the charity directly and hang up. It’s not rude, it’s smart.

We do live in a relatively safe community however, from time to time there are opportunists/thieves who drive, walk or peddle through our villages looking for easy targets. Always keep your doors and windows locked when not in use.

Always report any suspicious persons or vehicles to the police immediately. (Emergency 911, Non-Emergency 916-645-4040). When reporting a suspicious vehicle try to get the license plate number and give it to the police dispatcher when you call.
