Recent Scams

1….A resident received an email stating that SAM’S Club was sending the resident a free gift “for her patronage.” The resident wrote back accepting a Fitbit watch. The watch arrived and it wouldn’t work. A month later the resident received her credit card statement and there was an unrecognized charge on it for $95.69. Then a week later the resident received a package from a company named SIMPLEAPPLICATIONSHOPD, P.O. Box in Buffalo NY. With a $91.00 charge. The resident had not ordered that package.

BEWARE OF UNSOLICITED GIFTS and GIFTS FOR COMPLETING A SURVEY even when they appear to have come from a legitimate company.

2….The resident was contacted via email, allegedly from the USPS, in which it was stated that they were unable to deliver a package to their address. The email further stated that in order to redeliver this unsolicited package, the resident was to furnish additional information for his/her address.

THE POST OFFICE IS NOT GOING TO EMAIL YOU ABOUT A PARTICULAR PACKAGE. If you have signed up for informed delivery, there will be information about a package there, usually with a tracking number.

3…. Beware!!! Here is an old trick!!!!! You park in a parking lot and go shopping. When you come out and get in your vehicle you start to back up and see a piece of paper on the back window. You stop the car and get out to remove the item and guess what, you have left the vehicle with the motor running. The thief who has set this up, jumps into your vehicle and drives off with your car and ladies, probably your purse. Now the thief has your car, home address and your phone and may be headed to your house.

4…. A version of the Amazon scam is still circulating. An email advises that your order is coming and the amount is large, most recently it was $590. At the bottom a phone number is given for the “fraud line” in the event that you did not place the order. DO NOT CALL THAT NUMBER.

GO DIRECTLY TO THE AMAZON SITE AND LOGIN. CHECK YOUR ORDERS THERE.

5…. This is tax season. If you are due a refund via check, BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR MAILBOX EVERY DAY.

6…. Watch out for scammers claiming you need to respond to an email in order to get your stimulus payment.
