PROTECT– Providing Resources & Outreach to Elderly Citizens Together
***PURSE SNATCH ALERT***
A senior citizen went into a grocery store and left her purse unattended in the cart. While she was reaching for something off of the shelf – her wallet was stolen. She reported the theft to the store personnel.
After returning home, she received a call from the store. They indicated that they had located her wallet and requested that she return to the store to pick up her wallet.
She immediately returned to the store – except store personnel told her they never called her. By the time she returned home again, her house had been broken into and burglarized.
TIPS:
- Never leave your purse unattended in grocery carts or in your car.
- Zip your purse closed, lock it to the cart with the seat belt, or carry on your shoulder.
Neighborhood Watch Tips about other 2-phase crimes:
Phone or email scams where the victim is told their computer is at risk. The victim pays for remedying the problem with gift cards and then is contacted later saying there is a problem with the gift cards and asks for different cards.
URGENCY and FEAR are the hallmarks of a scam.
DO NOT use gift cards to pay for anything other than a gift.
Contact a FRIEND or RELATIVE for advice.
DO NOT CLICK ON LINKS IN EMAIL.
Just hang up!
Delete the email!
Recently a resident received the Grandchild Scam call. He told the caller that his oldest grandchild was one year old. PERFECT response!
old. PERFECT response!
A burglar steals driver’s license, garage door opener or registration from a vehicle, then returns to rob the house.
Keep everything out of sight WHENEVER and WHEREVER you park.
DO NOT leave your registration in the car — you can keep a photocopy folded in your wallet.
Consider using a keychain mini-garage door opener so you don’t have the opener in the car.
