Scam: Recent Scams reported in Lincoln Hills

1…… One of our residents received a letter, postmarked from Canada. The sender/”Scammer” was allegedly an “Account Manager” working at the National Bank of Canada. The “Scammer” goes into great detail explaining to the resident that he is in charge of an old account with $7.1 million in it. He alleges that the account owner has been deceased for ten years and the beneficiary status is open. The Scammer goes on to explain that the resident has the same last name as the deceased and that the “Scammer,” in his position as “Account Manager,” could make the resident the real beneficiary. The Scammer explains that once the funds are released to the resident, they are to be shared with this “Scammer.” The resident is to assure that he will keep all transactions confidential. The “Scammer” then gives an email address where this resident can respond and at that time they will discuss more details. The “Scammer” ends by saying, “This is an opportunity of a lifetime!!”

Our resident almost fell for this but his wife called some relatives and they realized it was a very detailed “Scam.”

2……There was a report from a resident who stated that he has received several calls, allegedly from “Apple” with an area code (619) on the caller ID. The caller states that the resident has an “iCloud data breach” and needs to call back immediately. This resident checked with the real Apple Support and they advise that this is a “Bogus call”. The only phone numbers they use are toll-free 866 712-7753 and 800 275-2273.

3…… Calls with the “Number on the caller ID is the resident’s number” are still being received. They usually call 8-10 times before giving up. One resident checked it out and Googled “I get calls from my own number”. The research indicated “not to answer those calls as they are “Scam” calls for the purpose of fraud and identity theft”.

It is recommended that you contact your provider and ask how to block calls that come in with your own number listed on the caller ID.

THERE ARE “SCAMS’ COMING IN DAILY AND THEY ARE MANY AND VARIED!!

THE SAFEST WAY TO AVOID THESE PHONE “SCAMS” IS TO JUST NOT ANSWER THE CALL UNLESS YOU RECOGNIZE THE CALLER. IF IT IS LEGITIMATE, THEY WILL LEAVE A MESSAGE.

THE SAME WITH EMAILS FROM SOMEONE OR SOME COMPANY THAT YOU DO NOT RECOGNIZE.

AGAIN, ANYTIME YOU RECEIVE A CALL, EMAIL OR LETTER FROM SOME PERSON YOU DO NOT KNOW, BE WARY AND WHEN IN DOUBT, CONTACT A RELATIVE, FRIEND, NEIGHBOR OR CALL ME FOR ADVICE.
