Email:

A resident reports that she received what appeared to be a bill for $103.00 from “Apple” for some “iTUNES” she allegedly had purchased. The logo and other information on this email looked legitimate. The resident never made such a purchase so she contacted “Apple Support” and they advised her that this was a SCAM.

ALWAYS BE LEARY OF ANY “UNSOLICITED” EMAILS!!! WHEN IN DOUBT CONTACT THE COMPANY DIRECTLY. LOOK FOR THE OFFICIAL WEBSITE AND USE THAT NUMBER. NEVER USE THE NUMBER LISTED ON THE “SUSPICIOUS” EMAIL. IF IT IS A CREDIT CARD COMPANY, LOOK UP THE NUMBER ON THE BACK OF YOUR CARD.

Phone Calls:

Technology makes it easy for scammers to fake or “spoof” caller ID information. They can make it look like they’re calling from a different place or phone number. Even your number. Scammers use this trick as a way to get around call-blocking and hide from law enforcement. They hope you’ll be curious enough to pick up. Don’t fall for it.

A resident reports that they received 6 calls from someone claiming to be Apple Support, on a recording alleging their iCloud account has been compromised. They answered the call and were prompted to press 1 to talk to someone. When a foreign sounding woman came on, the resident told her to delete them from their list. They received 3 more calls. They called the real Apple Support and they told them it was a SCAM and not to give any information to them. The caller ID says Apple Support, phone number 916-830-5610.

Another resident reports that she received 9 calls on her landline with her own name and phone number shown on caller ID. She reported this to the Lincoln Police who advised not to answer the call. Answering any robocall notifies the scammer that they have reached an active number. The scammer is counting on your curiosity to answer the call.

You can also report these calls to the Federal Trade Commission at FTC and the Federal Communications Commission at FCC
