Two postings re a fire in a garbage truck from Facebook on 8/20/18. There are some good reminders listed in the City of Lincoln posting.

Lincoln Police Department

Kudos to the quick thinking Maintenance Worker this morning who likely saved the City a lot of money. A fire ignited in the back of the garbage truck he was driving so he drove to the nearest, safest place (a dirt area at Joiner Park) and dumped the entire load. Lincoln Fire personnel responded and quickly extinguished the fire. While the cause of the fire is not yet known, it should serve as a reminder that it is never safe to dispose of hot/warm items (like BBQ coals) in a garbage receptacle.

City of Lincoln, Local Government

A City garbage truck caught fire earlier today. No one was harmed and little damage was done to the vehicle and surrounding area thanks to our trained drivers and an immediate response from public safety. In light of these events, some important reminders are noted below. The safety of our residents and well-being of the community is our top priority and concern.

Materials improperly placed into the trash can be significant fire hazards, capable of starting fires. To reduce the risk for trash fires, do NOT place the following materials in your trash:

• Flammable or combustible liquids (such as gasoline, oil-based paints, or kerosene)

• Hazardous materials (including items such as ammonia, bleach, pool chemicals, pesticides, paint thinners, etc.)

• Canisters containing propellants (including butane or propane)

• Cylinders containing compressed gas (such as propane, helium, oxygen, acetylene or fire extinguishers)

• Rechargeable batteries (which contain heavy metals, including lithium, nickel cadmium or lead-acid)

• Ashes (from fireplaces, fire pits or barbeque grills)

• Unknown substances (will be managed as Household Hazardous Waste)

The danger is that when these types of items are mixed, or come in contact with other substances that could be in the trash, the combination can be volatile and catch fire.

These items should be properly disposed of at the Western Placer Waste Management Authority’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Centerlocated at 3195 Athens Avenue (near the casino ). For more information, please visit  www.wpwma.com
