On Tuesday 07/31/18 at 6:45AM an Alert resident out for a walk observed smoke coming from the base of a small decorative plant in the front yard of a residence in the 500 block of Violet Ln. The owner of that residence was awakened, the fire department was called and both residents watched as the smoke turned into flames. The residents then extinguished the flames before the fire department arrived. One of the firefighters at the scene stated that the fire was caused by “Spontaneous Combustion”.!!
Note:
In this current extreme heat, bark packed on top of bark over the years, especially “Gorilla Hair Bark”, apparently can build up an excessive amount of heat and can “Spontaneously Ignite” !!
Check your yard, and if you find areas where the bark, especially the thinner bark, has built up, you should consider thinning out old bark before adding new.
