Now that telephone books are obsolete, we have two choices to find a vendor’s phone number:
1. Look on a statement
2. Find the website for the vendor in question and track down the phone number
When we try to save time by “Googling” the vendor’s name, we can become vulnerable to scams.
A resident tried to contact Amazon technical assistance for help getting into their account. She search for “Amazon Tech Help” and found a listing which looked “very legitimate.” The supposed Amazon tech told her that she was being hacked and therefore Amazon blocked her. She was then transferred to “experts” at a company called “wirelesscrew LLC.” After being told what it would cost to have them install a new spyware product, she got suspicious and hung up.
Another search could not find the company listed anywhere. She took her computer to get “cleaned” and have new spyware installed for quarter of the price quoted. The Geek Squad at Best Buy confirmed that this was a scam.
Once you find the vendor’s website and you have trouble finding a phone number, you can try two things:
1. Using the website’s search function indicated by a magnifying glass, enter “contact”
2. Look for “contact us” at the bottom of the home page where there usually are links to various sections of the website
